IBM plans to spend $1 billion dollars to develop the Linux operating system in the Power series server. With the amount of funding, IBM hopes the users to keep using the main competitor Windows operating system on the server that belongs to them.
Fund of 1 billion U.S. dollars will be used to IBM Power servers to help users migrate to the Linux platform.
As quoted by Business Insider, Wednesday (18/09/2013), this is the second time that IBM was poured funds amounting to help Linux. First aid conducted in 2000, while opening the way to a new Linux server and data center world, a world dominated by Microsoft.
Microsoft itself ever hinder the server and data center users to use Linux. Microsoft threatened to sue users who use Linux as a server operating system is open-source violates 235 patents around.
However, these efforts seem to fail as Linux continues to evolve into one of the largest enterprise operating system. This happens with the help of IBM. Currently, Linux has become the choice of server operating system around the world. He is also known to be applied in devices that belong to Google and Facebook.
Even so, the market share of Linux is still far less than Microsoft. In its latest quarterly report, IDC said Linux is only used by 23 percent of the server. Meanwhile, Windows leads with 49 percent.
Is the gelontoran fund of 1 billion U.S. dollars, the servers in the world will switch to Linux?
