Is supported by processor 8-core (4 +4) Octa Exynos 5, Galaxy S4 is one of the fastest Android smartphone available today. But the manufacturer, Samsung, is alleged to have cheated to make it look more smart phones than actual performance.
Technology site AnandTech conducted a series of benchmark tests on the Samsung Galaxy S4. They find that this smart phone apparently deliberately raise GPU clockspeed when running some benchmark applications to boost the value.
PowerVR SGX544MP3 GPU in the Exynos SoC used by Octa 5 Galaxy S4 belongs to Anandtech actually running at 480 MHz frequency. However, upon detection of a specific benchmark and the GLBenchmark like AnTuTu, the GPU clockspeed directly raised to 532 MHz rate.
At issue, the Galaxy S4 only speed boost in the benchmark applications, but not beyond that. That is, performance benchmarks Galaxy S4 in contrast to the real situation in everyday use.
Not only that, when running benchmarks, the four-core Cortex-A15 high performance was rushed at full speed and locked in the figure, which does not go down even though new users on the screen menu and do not run the benchmark.
Benchmark Booster
How to cheat benchmarks Galaxy S4? When the operating system files dissect the Galaxy S4, Anandtech found a program called TwDVFSApp.apk is responsible for arranging the processor frequency when running the benchmark.
Acronym "DVFS" in the file name stands for "dynamic voltage and frequency scaling".
String named "BenchmarkBooster" in TwDVFSApp.apk contains the names of popular benchmark application, including the Quadrant standard, advanced, and professional, Linpack (free version), Benchmark Pi, and AnTuTu.
When detecting these applications, the Galaxy S4 will automatically raise the clockspeed. "It looks like optimization to produce high benchmark scores in tests CPU, and GPU performance values as high as possible," wrote Anandtech.
The same thing happened in the U.S. version of the Galaxy S4 which uses Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 600. Before investigated by Anandtech, this phenomenon was first discovered by the Beyond3D forum member named Nebuchadnezzar.
