2 Chainz Had To Pay Ludacris $100k To Leave DTP
As a part of the duo Playaz Circle, Tity Boi, along with partner in rhyme Dolla Boy, exploded on to the scene in 2007. With the Lil Wayne-assistedsingle “Duffle Bag Boy”, they achieved great crossover status; climbing up to #15 on the U.S. Hot 100 chart and making it to #2 on the rap charts. The success, however, was short lived and the group would not see another top hit again.
In 2011, Tity Boi decided to go the solo route, leaving DTP records and re-inventing himself with a new name: 2 Chainz.
2 Chainz has since become arguably one of the hottest and most sought out rappers for a feature. Over a dozen songs that the rapper has appeared on since 2011 has made the charts, with some of the most successful songs being A$AP Rocky’s “F*ckin Problems” and Kanye West’s “Mercy”. Some of his biggest solo work that made its impact on the hot 100 charts included his singles “I’m Different”, the Drake-assisted “No Lie” and the Kanye West-assisted “Birthday Song”. His latest single, “Feds Watching”, is currently climbing up the charts as radio stations nationwide add it into their rotations.
With all of this new found success, 2 Chainz is helping more than just himself financially. Ludacris recently made a statement that he was stillmaking money off of the rapper and his exploding success. 2 Chainz recently addressed these comments during an interviewon the Breakfast Club in New York.
“It didn’t bother me, but I think it bothered the people around me…For the most part, people want me to say something negative, or do something negative, so I don’t. The truth of the matter is I’ve been wanting to lead a label. When I left, I guess they knew or had some type of vision that I wasn’t going to stop there, because I was turnt up when i left.”
2 Chainz also revealed that leaving the label had cost him some money.
“I had to pay to leave…. The amount of money that I paid them is not going to balance out, where I went, my trajectory. It’s $100k” the rapper stated.
While $100k is nearly double what the average American makes for an annual salary, it was recently revealed that 2 Chainz makes this amount for a single guest feature.
When asked if he felt like he should have had to pay to get out of his deal, 2 Chainz sympathized with Luda’s decision.
“At that time I didn’t. I felt like it should have just been an amicable split… but you don’t know if it was them. They’re a machine inside a machine and they got Def Jam”
At the end of the day 2 Chainz is still grateful for his time at DTP.
“I can’t reiterate how blessed I am…. For me, i’m just a trap dude trying to do a cook book…. I didn’t even have a bank account, I just had shoe boxes of money… So that was growth for me. I have multiple accounts now.”
