The home page of the website ask.fm (PA)The social network which was established June 16 2010, the not so common at the time, had undergone about a year and half of reduce activity. But in recent times has gained the attention of social network die-hards.
The father of a 14-year-old girl who killed herself after receiving a barrage of “online abuse” on the question-and-answer website Ask.fm has called for the site’s creator to be “done for manslaughter”.

Hannah Smith (Picture: Facebook)Hannah Smith was discovered by her 16-year-old sister Jo, hanged at her home in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, on Friday. Her father, Dave Smith, initially announced the news of Facebook, saying: “Just to let all my friends know my youngest daughter took her own life last night.
“Rest in peace my baby and you will never be forgotten xxxxxxx.”
He later said he had discovered cruel taunts on her profile at Ask.fm, which allows users to anonymously send questions and comments to any other user.
One anonymous user repeatedly told Hannah that she should commit suicide, sending comments such as, “every1 will be happy if u died”.
Hannah’s father called for the site to be shut down, writing: “The fact that these people can be anonymous is wrong. The person that created this website should be done for manslaughter. Any parents that have children, please don’t let them go on this site.”
And he told the Daily Mirror: “How many more teenagers will kill themselves because of online abuse before something is done?
”These sick people are just able to go online and hide behind a mask of anonymity while they abuse vulnerable teenagers,” he said.
Nora Parker, headteacher at Lutterworth High School where Hannah was in Year 9, said the staff and students were deeply upset at hearing news of her death.
She said: “Hannah, who just completed her final year at the school and was looking to transfer to Lutterworth College in August, was a bright, bubbly, popular and thoughtful girl who was liked and respected by all those she came into contact with.
”She had everything to live for and her family, who are utterly devastated, are at a loss to understand why this has happened.“

Emma-Jane Cross, from campaign group BeatBullying, said that one in three young people are subjected to “cyber-bullying”, and one in 13 face persistent abuse online.
”We cannot stand by while innocent children lose their lives,” she said. “Adults need to set an example for young people and we all have a responsibility to tackle this type of behaviour and keep our children safe.
“We want internet service providers, schools, Government and the police to come together and produce a UK anti-bullying strategy, to prove that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.”
The Department for Education told the BBC in a statement that no-one ”should have to suffer the fear and victimisation of bullying“.
”Through the UK Council of Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) we are working with social networking sites and internet providers to make the internet a safer place for a young people,“ it said.
An e-petition has been set up calling for “the Government to step in and insist that Ask.fm and similar sites help us protect our young people”. It criticises the fact that children can join from the age of 13 and are able to post anonymously.

Under a section titled “Safety” on the Ask.fm website, users are advised: “Block and report users who break our Terms of service, and tell an adult if you're being targeted. Don't respond to questions that are inappropriate or abusive.”
It adds: “You can turn off anonymous questions in your Privacy settings - this way nobody will be able to ask you anonymously and you'll have a better control over content you receive in your Inbox.”
And while Ask.fm also says “Anonymity should never be used to ask questions that are mean or hurtful”, it has been criticised for a lack of effective measures to prevent this happening.
An inquest into Hannah’s death opened and adjourned at Leicestershire Coroner’s Court today. It heard that a post-mortem examination had so far proved inclusive.
